BEARD CARE: TIPS FOR HEALTHY & FULL FACIAL HAIR

 1. Wash your beard regularly

Shampooing your beard is arguably the most important part of beard maintenance. It doesn’t just keep the hair clean, but the skin underneath too. Regular washing removes dust, dead skin and other debris, which helps to prevent all manner of issues, from ingrown hairs and clogged pores to itchiness and odours.

The hair on your face is different to the hair on your head, and so is the surrounding skin, which is why it’s important to use a specialist beard shampoo rather than your usual shampoo (or worse still, body wash!). Trust us, your face will thank you for it!

In terms of frequency, we recommend washing your beard two or three times a week – any more and you’ll strip away too many of your natural oils and leave your beard and skin feeling (and looking) dry.

2. Exfoliate once or twice a week

Exfoliation is a key step in any skin care routine, and just because your beard is covering half of your face, that doesn’t mean the skin underneath should be neglected! Exfoliating your beard area once or twice a week helps to remove dirt and dead skin cells, which keeps your skin clean, unclogs your pores and encourages hair growth.

So not only will your skin be happier (no beard acne here thank you very much), your beard will be happier, healthier and fuller too.

 3. Apply beard oil to towel-dried facial hair

Beard oils are a must-have in your daily beard care routine, helping to moisturise and nourish both your facial hair and your skin. They help replenish any natural oils that are lost during the washing and exfoliating phases, which in turn helps to keep your beard hair soft, reduce skin irritation – particularly during the initial growth phase – and keep that dreaded beard dandruff at bay.

The extra perk? Your beard will smell amazing – a blessing for you and anyone lucky enough to get close to it!

The best time to apply beard oil is after washing your face or having a shower, when your beard hair is damp. Towel dry your beard, then put a couple of drops of beard oil on the palm of your hand. Rub your hands together to coat your palms, and distribute the oil evenly through your beard and moustache.

How much product you use will depend on the length and thickness of your beard. If your beard is thick and long, you might want to use a couple more drops. Apply the beard oil every day – either once or twice depending on your beard and how much moisture it needs. Over time, you’ll figure out what works best for you!

4. Brush your beard to prevent it from tangling

Brushing your beard is beneficial for so many reasons. It helps to tame and untangle your facial hair – or hopefully prevent it from getting tangled in the first place! This helps to keep it neat and styled, and also encourages hair growth in the right direction. Brushing your beard helps to sweep away dust and grime between washes, and it evenly distributes your skin’s natural oils and your beard oil, ensuring that your facial hair is conditioned from root to tip.

Brushing your beard should be part of your daily grooming routine – alongside your morning skin care routine and daily spritz of fragrance! After you’ve showered and applied beard oil, give your facial hair a good brush through (using a brush made with natural hairs), and you’re good to go!

5. Trim your beard regularly to keep it in shape

Unless you want to spend a small fortune at the barbers, then trimming your beard regularly at home is the best way to keep it in shape. Armed with a beard comb and a beard trimmer (or a pair of scissors if you want to keep it old school!), carefully prune your facial hair, tidying and shaping into your preferred style.

Always trim your beard when it’s dry, as you’ll be able to see exactly where it needs trimming. Use your comb to coach everything into place, and snip any stray hairs that stand out or hang over your lip. Use the naked guard on your beard trimmer or a {razor} to tidy up your neckline and cheek line for a polished and pro-level finish.
