There are many different things to consider when finding your foundation shade – we’re talking everything from identifying your undertone and understanding your skin concerns to selecting your preferred coverage and format. Should foundation be lighter or darker than your skin?
As a rule, your foundation should generally match your skin tone as closely as possible for the most natural look. It should mimic your natural skin colour and not be noticeably lighter or darker. This ensures your complexion looks even and smooth. Using a foundation that is too light for your skin can create a stark contrast and may look ashy or cakey, especially if you have warm undertones. And in the same way a foundation that is too dark can give your face an masked finish. It may also lead to an uneven appearance with your neck and body, especially in natural lighting.
