101 GUIDE TO MUIHOOD

A close up shot of MUIHOOD’S bestselling Tao Rice Water Essence laying angled on a bed of rice and reflecting a orange-toned hue.

Rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, Muihood has landed to unite age-old rituals with science-led formulas. Dreaming up skin care solutions that tend to and advance both the health and energy of our complexions, the brand encourages a more mindful ritual primed to bring radiant results.

Intrigued? Us too – which is why we sat down with Muihood’s founder, Charlotte Yau, to get up close and personal with the brand’s bestsellers and uncover everything we need to know about traditional Chinese medicine.

WHAT IS THE MEANING BEHIND THE NAME ‘MUIHOOD’

“The name Muihood means sisterhood. Mui in Cantonese translates to sister and therefore Muihood is here to embody a sisterhood energy where we learn more about how to look after our qi (energy) better” says Charlotte.

THE MAKING OF MUIHOOD

Growing up, traditional Chinese medicine (otherwise known as TMC) was the only thing that truly helped soothe Charlotte’s sensitive skin and hormonal breakouts. “From Gua Sha and acupuncture to herbal medicine and much more, these age-old treatments have helped bring balance to my skin and qi through a holistic healing lens. After much research, I realised the market didn’t have any brands rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, so I created Muihood – a beauty brand that makes Chinese medicine accessible for everyone.” Bringing her heritage to the forefront of the skin care industry, Charlotte is on a mission to demystify traditional Chinese medicine, allowing it to resonate with communities and become more than just a social trend.

WHAT IS TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE

Recognising the holistic approach to beauty and wellness, Muihood embraces the wisdom and results of traditional Chinese medicine – but what exactly is it? “Traditional Chinese medicine is a 3000 year old ancient science that’s been passed down for generations. It shows us how our general health such as digestion, sleep, mental health, emotions etc offers harmony between our bodies and nature. TCM treats skin by looking internally for any imbalance.” Utilising herbal blends to bring balance back to our skin and provide essential nutrients to our moisture barrier, Muihood’s beauty products include powerhouse ingredients such as ginseng and goji berries for their “rejuvenating and nourishing properties. These two herbs feature in Muihood’s Good Chi Cleansing Balm to help protect our skin from environmental aggressors too. Two ingredients that also have many antioxidant benefits are fermented rice water (which is rich in vitamins B, C and E) and snow mushroom (which is called “fountain of youth” in China). They’re known to help with nourishing the skin, improving skin elasticity and are deeply hydrating.”

HOW CAN WE INCORPORATE TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE IN EVERYDAY LIFE

Along with nurturing the soul, traditional Chinese medicine offers centuries of knowledge on treating skin concerns – and luckily for us Charlotte explains how there are many ways you can seamlessly slot the ritual into your daily routine. “Simple day-to-day TCM practices include drinking herbal tea! I love adding goji berries, chrysanthemum to hot water, this helps with hydration and boosts the immune system. And on nights where I've got more time - I love a mugwort-soaked bath, as this really helps me unwind, relax and release any tension in my body to allow me to enjoy a good night's sleep!”

As for introducing TCM into to your beauty regime? It’s just as easy. “In the evening, give yourself five minutes to unwind before doing your PM routine. I would then cleanse using Muihood’s Good Chi cleanser. Next, with the Tao essence sitting on the skin, give yourself a facial massage with a gua sha spoon to stimulate blood circulation. And if like me you’re normally working on screens all day, focus on the eyes and in between the brows to helps reduce puffiness and tension.”
