If youre living in London, chances are that youve passed the Earl of East stores and done a double take: picture a haven of plants, plush pillows and their all-famous home fragrances. Formed around four pillars Create, Curate, Collaborate and Community the lifestyle store-cum-studio is beloved for its in-store candle-pouring and workshops. What started in Hackney as a succinct edit of candles has since evolved into a line of home fragrance favourites that spans across bath salts, incense and aromatic mists.
With candles at the core of the brand since their beginnings as a weekly pop-up stall at Netil Market, it's safe to say that Earl of East's Japanese Bathing Ritual Soy Wax Candle is the ultimate introduction to the range (and a delight for anyone with a bougie obsession).
Beyond their effortlessly chic vessels and refined typography, the candles are made from an eco-soy blend of high-quality, raw materials from ethical suppliers; co-founder Niko Dafkos assures that their work does not contribute to deforestation and respects the rights of workers and indigenous people. Available in two heavenly scents, the only hard part is picking your favourite; taking its name from the Japanese word for hot spring, the Onsen scent profile has an uplifting medley of peppermint, eucalyptus and neroli that emulates the very same sense of serenity that makes the onsen a cultural tradition. The Shinrin Yoku literally forest bath in Japanese scent is an ode to the practice of disconnecting from our fast-paced world, being in nature and absorbing the peaceful atmosphere of the woods. It has an earthy profile of cedarwood, black pepper and oakmoss that conjures the image of a forest floor after the early morning rain abates.
Place in the central part of the room for optimum fragrance distribution.
These candles are made out of 100% eco-soy [non-GMO] wax & essential oils. All materials used are vegan, non-GMO, paraben-free, phthalate free & cruelty free. Glue used is solvent free & vegan.

Lovely
My favourite candles for the bathroom and from a cruelty free brand which seems to be quite rare for candles sadly

Nice smell but issue with wick
Really nice smell but I had an issue with the wick folding in on itself (even if I kept it trimmed) so I couldn’t use it towards the end

Amazing
Onsen is the first candle I tried from earl of east, I absolutely adore it. It’s warm, relaxing and uplifting, and reminds of my holidays in Japan. The candle burns really nicely and the scent is long lasting. Highly recommend.

Smells so clean
This is basically what you would expect it to be! It smells so clean but also has a peppermint kind of smell. This one of my favorite candles and I’m gonna buy the bigger size

Poor scent throw
The scent is relaxing, and somewhat earthy, unobjectionable but I wasn’t especially wowed. The scent throw was awful; it may as well be unscented when lit. The packaging’s solid and substantial, if a little medicinal, and it burns cleanly with a reasonable burn time. Altogether unexciting and poor value, though functions correctly.
